The Big Three

The big three include Ventanas, Baru, and Whale's Tail Beach.

The big three include Ventanas, Baru, and Whale’s Tail Beaches. Sigh. They all have unique qualities. Ventanas has two beach tunnels that explode with surf, pounding through the cavern like a hungry sea monster. It’s a singular environment where weird water creatures cling to the slick walls, and the sand is soft and sloopy. The rest of the beach is an idyllic playground with a cool stream and shade from the surrounding cliffs. Locals love this beach. Kids love the tide pools, and I always have to share them with rowdy, splashing boys and girls.

See below for Baru and Whale’s Tail…

Ventanas Beach. Isn’t it beautiful?

Ventanas Beach with my book. 🙂 I’ll always bring my book to leave for traveling tourists. It’s the best thing about being an author, the mystery of who will read it and where they will leave it.

You’ll reach Baru Beach on a four-wheel drive jungle road that’s bumpy and full of deep puddles. We always park by the first puddle and walk the remainder, passing giant trees and busy birds. But I’ve never seen an armadillo. The beach seemingly continues all the way to Nicaragua, and I always wish I had an e-bike to explore for miles and miles. You’ll have this beach all to yourself, except for the local trucks that pass through the jungle, collecting coconuts to sell to tourists

This is my only Baru photo this year.

Whale’s Tail is hard to capture digitally because you can only see the tail if you’re a pelican or a drone. But it really does look like a Whale’s Tail. Be prepared for a long walk to the end of the tail. The beach is enormous at low tide, both long and wide. This beach also has a cool mangrove stream with old ruins, endless driftwood, and jungle mountain views.

I kept this triple-hole rock.

I love this photo. Stay tuned for Dominicalito!
