Rochester, Minnesota

Railways and Fairways...

The first night in town we walked the goose poop loop trail (unofficial moniker). Rochester’s claim to fame includes The Mayo Clinic and a large Canadian Geese population.

During our stay, we biked twice on the epic 60-mile Root River Trail System that links ten small towns near Lanesboro, Minnesota. Each ride totaled 32 miles out and back, and there’s only one route between Rushford and Houston that we’ve never biked. We’re planning to check that one off the list later in August. I never take many photos when biking because I don’t want to get off my bike to snap a picture. But I still managed to capture the essence of our trip. Follow my wheels…

Enroute between Fountain City and Harmony, Minnesota. This ride is an uber charming trek along creek and dale, forests and rocky hills. There must be at least 10-15 bridge crossings and countless curious cows, too.

Without the railroad history, we wouldn’t have these bucolic rails to trails.

We always have a picnic in Preston. Did you know that Chimney Swifts are the fastest birds out there? Plus, they are unable to perch on a branch so they spend all day flying until it’s time to roost.

Back in Rochester, the Olmstead County Fair was in full swing.

The weekly Farmer’s Market is ajacent to the fair. We stocked up on Lefse.

A sleeping joey…

Camel rides.

The petting zoo. Sigh.

Bubble boys and girls.

Yesterday, we biked between Fountain City and Whalen, with lunch at Pedal Pushers and ice cream at Another Time.

There’s nothing better than whizzing down the bike trail around 9 am, with indigo buntings buzzing around the brush, and busy birds in the trees. Wildflowers perfume the air. The sun is low in the sky. My husband says it’s the best high!

  2. What a great collection of colour and movement. I have plans to do a rail trail a little way from me, but I am not a natural bike rider!

  3. You need a GoPro for your bike 😉 I too know the pain of Canadian geese and the droppings they leave. I can just imagine the trail if the geese frequent it.

  4. Hello, 🙂
Beautiful photos of your bike ride and visit to the petting zoo and farmer’s market.

  5. You was very busy on the bycicle indeed. I admire this! And I enjoyed your post very much again.

I’m a little short of energy at the moment, I admit openly. We’re just getting from one day to the next… Comforting words definitely help.
I am very happy about the contribution to MosaicMonday again.
    Kind regards from Heidrun

  6. What a delightful read! Your adventure in Rochester sounds absolutely enchanting, especially the biking on the Root River Trail System. The way you described the charming landscapes, bridge crossings, and curious cows really brought the experience to life. I could almost feel the fresh morning air and hear the birdsong as you whizzed down the trail. It’s wonderful how you’ve captured the essence of such a beautiful area, blending nature, history, and local charm. Thank you for sharing your journey—it’s truly inspiring and makes me want to explore these trails myself!
