Puerto Rico means prosperous port, which made it irresistible to pirates. Plus, you needed to pass by the El Morro Fortress to reach the new world. Five hundred years ago, the Spanish Fort began with one cannon and ended with the intimidating six-story Fortress you see today. When an enemy ship passed through the bay between the main island of Puerto Rico and the city of Old San Juan, the Fortress El Caneulo (Puerto Rico side) and El Morro (Old San Juan) created an unpenetrable crossfire that warded off pirates and other countries.
But things transformed when the interlopers could fly over by air. The island changed hands to the United States. The Fort is a fascinating and beautiful place to stroll. Follow my feet…
Iguanas guard the windows!
The lighthouse is the icing on a solid and steadfast cake. This post ends my dance with Puerto Rico.
Hello Sharon,
Wonderful photos of the fort and the lighthouse. Love iguanas guarding the windows, I have a similar photo at the same spot. Thank you for linking up and sharing your post. Take care, have a wonderful week!
What an amazing fort to explore. And the views are spectacular.
I was totally enraptured by Puerto Rico. Thanks for taking me back through your super shots! And thanks for sharing at http://image-in-ing.blogspot.com/2023/11/a-few-sights-from-brussels.html
I’d love to explore that fort.
The views are amazing! 🏰
Beautiful shots.
A beautiful and interesting piece of history! I’ve been to Puerto Rico a couple times, but never toured the Fort. Thanks for showing it to me!
I love old forts, especially on the coast. Used to be such a big deal and then became obsolete except for those of us who like to explore them.
Great shots. Reminds me of the fort in St. Augustine Florida.
