Canyonlands National Park

Utah's otherworldly land of red rock...

The name says it all: Canyonlands.

The cows of Canyonlands.

You don’t need a mule to traverse the canyon, just a four-wheel drive vehicle. We completed Shafer Road backward and forwards, and it was freaking fabulous! Scary and tight, rad and red. I feel like the dirt drive wasn’t just a trip highlight but a lifetime travel highlight.

Hello Horseshoe.

The La Sal Mountain range.

The drive takes guts and balance.

I love this photo! Otherworldly Mars (I mean Moab) or bust.

  2. What a wonderful trip, and it sounds like you had a lot of fun. Growing up in Nevada, I traveled to Utah quite a few time. I’ve never seen the Canyonlands, but we drove through Capitol Reef National Park when I was in my forties and It was mesmerizing. One of my most favorite places.

  5. Wow! What an experience. I had visited Canyonlands, but it just whetted my appetite for a longer, more comprehensive visit one day. I’ll keep this drive in mind. Thank you for sharing.

  6. It’s the perfect setting for a book about another world! Doesn’t really seem like ours at all! We were there with a four-wheel drive (our son’s) who also talked me into a long hot hike that I didn’t think I could make — but did! (It was a few years ago — doubt he’d even ask me now!) Great memories , Utah has some amazing places for sure. We also enjoyed Moab on the same trip. with the same Jeep.
