Labor Day: 2025

"I believe that summer is our time, a time for the people, and that no politician should be allowed to speak to us during the summer. They can start talking again after Labor Day." ~ Lewis Black

Labor Day weekend began with a scenic drive along Lake Pepin, and a plein air reading stop enroute to The Stone Barn for pizza. My cast/boot limited my Labor Day activities by 99%. Sigh. But food I could do.

Now, instead of staying on campus at my alma mater UW-Stout, I’m watching the campus from my hotel window in Menomonie, Wisconsin.

Mosaic Monday. We picked blueberries and grapes at Cain’s Orchard, had a picnic lunch in Hixton, Wisconsin, and later, enjoyed Sammy’s Pizza in Carson Park in Eau Claire.

Do you remember the song Rock Lobster by the B-52’s?

Our Wisconsin tour ended with cemetery flowers and a visit to my parent’s grave in Caryville. As we lingered, listening to morning birds amid the peaceful, rural setting, I read aloud my short story about the recent passing of my cat Akua through Heaven’s Gate. Tears ensued.

I posted the story in my author newsletter, but you can read it here.

Have a meaningful Labor Day!

  2. Oh, I can well understand you. There are memories on campus and, on the other hand, the limitations of a sick foot. Yes, my knee and spine are no longer fully mobile either. It’s all about making the best of the situation.
Thank you for sharing at MosaicMonday

  3. Sorry about your leg. I hope it heals quickly though I know these things can take time there are always exceptions. Your scenery is very pretty and a great setting for reading. I love the photo of the big tree stump on the beach.
