I didn’t save the best for last when it came to scenery. But some of you may be interested in a harrowing tale of survival and persistence, so carry on. The first thing you’ll discover at the Bluff Fort Historic Site is a documentary about a Mormon mission to establish a settlement east of the Colorado River. The goal was to make peace with the Navajo Nation, along with religious conversion. Sigh.
The first problem was a cliff.
I won’t go into details, but the journey was nearly insurmountable for carriages and beasts of burden. As fall turned to winter, they found themselves trapped in a river basin, hungry and weak, with a limitless and impossible cliff to navigate. Many died attempting to climb newly blasted dugways, steps, and primitive roads up, and up, and up.
But they did it and established a fort…

Each cabin had a taped recording about the history of its inhabitants.

A sad story. But the history, the past is most difficult to understand now for us. We have water, enough to eat … and sometimes the people are still dissatisfied. I believe to visit such places is good for remembering.
Thank you very much for sharing at MosaicMonday
What great shots of a hard place to navigate. They made the best of a bad situation. Thank you for the history lesson. Mission Impossible, indeed.

It seems as if no place was too remote for the early Mormon explorers! I love the old well and freight wagon. And what an ornate wood burning stove!
Utah is so spectacular! I want to revisit it one day!
Worth a Thousand Words
What a challenge for the Morman’s to encounter to find a safe place to worship. Your photographs are interesting. It will help folks realize how tough life was just to set up a fort.
So cool! I love places like this!
Those Mormons, they sent missions all over the west. This looks like one of the more challenging ones.
