Mystery Spheres of Costa Rica

"If ants are such busy workers, how come they find time to go to all the picnics?" ~
Marie Dressler

Two years ago, we toured an old banana plantation, Finca 6, in the Diquis Delta of Costa Rica, and last year, we snorkeled at Cano Island. Both of these places unearthed a mysterious treasure trove of stone petrospheres. Some are small, but others measure almost nine feet across. Their origin story is unknown, and they date to 600 CE.

But you don’t have to take a tour to see them. We returned to the town of Sierpe and had a picnic in the local park, en route to shop for Boruca masks in the nearby mountains. The park has many crumbling spheres scattered about, blooming trees, olfactory nirvana, balmy days, and visiting scarlet macaws. What’s not to love? Follow my feet…

We followed a southern Santa, returning his tree to the northpole.

To reach the remote Boruca Village, you drive a narrow dirt road over the spine of a mountain.

This was my favorite Boruca mask, but I didn’t buy it.

Before we left the village, we toured the cemetery. So it really was a day of spheres and tears.

  2. That’s the Cannonball Tree flower! Its large, spherical fruit likely served as the artistic inspiration for the mysterious stone spheres. The tree is quite common in Bangalore.

  5. All of those photos are stunning, and I really love the Boruca Mask. It’s stunning. I really want to get one for my office, and I actually think it might get the ball rolling for some of my patients to open up. If nothing else, would be an awesome conversation starter haha I know it was 2 years ago, but your trip looks like it was amazing. Thanks for sharing!
