Drum Making 101 Update!

As I gazed outside this window longingly, we began our drum making 101 session inside the top floor of the hotel. The top floor had 360 views of the town and mountains surrounding Pisac, Peru. It was cold, beautiful, bright, and full of mysterious ceremonial crystals and stones. Certainly, it was the beating heart of the hotel. But my heart longed to explore ruins and architecture in nearby Cusco or perhaps engage on an eerie stroll through a local cemetery. Instead, I manipulated a slimey piece of wet leather onto an octagon frame, and I managed to thread the laces through the back. But arthritis prevented the integral part: tightening the strings until it was as tight as a drum—literally. With the help of my teachers, I returned home with a drum that sounded great. But I knew the drum would grow dusty if I didn’t turn it into a show piece. So, I dusted off my paint brushes and drew a local scene onto the leather and painted it with all the verve of a tortured Vincent van Gogh. Painting is frustrating, but I’m happy with the result, and as you can see, I found a place to display my souvenir.

Last summer, I painted a wooden surfboard and turtle. I love them flanking the flat screen. (see below)
