Needles: Part 1

"May your rivers flow without end... down into a desert of red rock, blue mesas, domes and pinnacles and grottos of endless stone, and down again into a deep vast ancient unknown chasm where bars of sunlight blaze on profiled cliffs... where something strange and more beautiful and more full of wonder than your deepest dreams waits for you-beyond that next turning of the canyon walls." ~ Edward Abbey

In the southeast corner of Canyonlands National Park, forty miles south of Moab, colorful Cedar Mesa Sandstone spires rise like needles. But the drive into the park looks like the rest of Moab, with massive red mesas melting under the sun.

The first thing we did was enjoy a picnic lunch by the visitor center before enjoying nature’s Martian fairyland. I can’t wait to return to Utah this summer. 🙂

 Follow our feet…

Adventure awaits!

Mosaic Monday Petroglyphs. History carved in desert varnish. The top left image sure looks like an alien to me! Stay tuned for more from Needles in Part 2.

The energy swirls of the southwest inspired my book cover. Be sure to stop by Orange Hat Publishing to read my writing article inspired by The Lord of the Rings. I had fun with it. 🙂 Click here!

Thank you too for leaving a comment. Yes, chocolate is always welcome.

  3. You painted the landscape with both words and images—makes me feel like I’ve already stood in the shadows of those towering spires and wandered through nature’s sculpture garden. That Edward Abbey quote sets the perfect tone.

  4. Loved seeing the petroglyphs especially! Having messages from people who created them, but not always understanding what they wanted to say that was so important to chip into the rocks! I just came back from Arches Ntl. Park (and posted the photos) which was our first choice to visit, with Canyonlands a close second. Glad to see what it looks like!
