Cloudy with a Chance of Cicada Pee. Scarlet Macaw Traffic Jam. Squawking Deafens Unlucky Tourist. A Monstrous Tide Pool Consumes Popular Beach. These were last week’s headlines in Costa Rica!

We experienced our first cicada rainstorm after booking a rainforest tour with Kids Saving the Rainforest, and halfway through, it started raining. Normal, right? But it was only raining under one tree, with clear skies overhead. Meanwhile, a deafening drone of cicadas filled the air, so ubiquitous that you might forget the sound was flowing. It felt like movie magic. Instead, it was pee. Cicadas soak up so much tree sap and liquid that they eventually pee in unison. It rains cicada. I loved it!

Scarlet macaws fly around Manuel Antonio like a busy JFK at Christmas. If you don’t see them, you still hear them, and vice versa. They even do layovers on people’s decks. They landed on the balcony above ours and nearly touched down on our deck, too. A red devil descended amid a flurry of wings but took one look at me and squawked, “Abort!”

Day 26

Monkey money.

Do you see the cute little face in the second photo?

  3. Beautiful photos, Sharon. The macaw is beautiful as well as the sunsets.

I can’t imagine it raining cicada pee! It sounds so unusual and definitely must be a sight to see and hear. I remember when I lived in NYC the sound of cicadas always signaled it was the end of summer as they appeared in late August. I don’t see or hear them here in Colorado.

  4. Cicada pee! Can’t wait to talk about that fact I just learned. (I’d rather be where I could see/hear it happening, but I’ll have to settle for next best!) You were definitely in the right place at the right time. Gorgeous pictures — the stuff of dreams. (well, maybe not the pee part …
