Ah, Costa Rica. It’s almost time to return to paradise. What’s that you say? Did you say you don’t want to walk on a beach where vultures outnumber people? Well, that’s fine with me. As it turns out, Dominicalito Beach is my favorite beach, and I love having it all to myself.
Vultures love it, too. That’s because fishermen embark on a nautical sabbatical every night at dusk, returning at dawn with their catch. Vultures clean the waters and beach of the fishy innards thrown about, and then they skulk around menacingly most of the day. But I don’t dislike things for being ugly. Except, perhaps, spiders and house centipedes. The horror! Costa Rica has giant spiders, too. Do I need to reframe what constitutes paradise? No, I still love it. Follow my scaredy toes…

It sounds like the vultures provide important cleanup for the beach, so they should be welcome. But yeah, they are a bit creepy.

We have turkey vultures in Oklahoma. Ugly as all get out but they soar beautifully. They and your buzzards perform a public service in my opinion.
Vultures in the Midwest wait there turn while a smaller bird eats dead prey on the side of the road. Impressive! Your pictures inspire me to put Costa Rican on my “bucket list.” Your images are fantastic!
